Rhineland

Germans call this area The Rhineland-Pfalz, the river valleys created by the Ahr, Lahn, Moselle (Mosel) and Rhine Rivers. In the Middle Ages the Moselle and Rhine river valleys were controlled by feudal lords who built castles along the rivers, establishing dozens of "tollbooths." Centuries before that, the Romans founded the oldest city in Germany - Trier.
