Westport
Seaside city of Westport is situated at the entrance to Grays Harbor, a busy commercial fishing harbor and deep water port.
Whale watching -
Onshore whale watching - The
lookout tower on the Westport jetty (Neddie Rose Lane) is the entrance to the harbor. This is a good location to spot
gray whales migrating north, last March to May. Bring binoculars.
Next to the viewing tower are picnic tables, bring lunch and snacks, or walk down the street to Whale of a Cone ice cream shop.
Whale watching cruises - Gray whale watching cruises (March to May) are available from Ocean Sportfishing at Westport Marina. Along with gray whales, you might see an orca also (orcas hunt the gray whales).
Westport Light State Park -
Long flat sand beach, look for sand dollars and shells, build sand castles and driftwood forts, and go kite flying.
Westport Maritime Museum -
Out in front, are marine life skeletons - gray whale, sea lion, porpoise, minke whale. Inside the museum is a 19th century fresnel lens from the Destruction Island Lighthouse, model ships, exhibits about shipwrecks, and coast guard rescues.
Museum is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
Westport Seafood Festival - Don't miss the yearly seafood festival in summer - fresh barbecued salmon, white fish and oysters, chowder, corn on the cob, live music and locally made crafts.
