Llangollen

Llangollen is most famous for Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod, "the world's greatest folk festival." But whether you come for the music festival or not, there are plenty of fun things to do with kids.

If your kids like model railways, check out Model Railway World at Lower Dee Mills, thousands of model trains with 30 layouts. To see the real thing, take the Llangollen Steam Railway from Llangollen to Carrog. For schedules, check out the Railway site.

To dip into a bygone era, visit the Llangollen Victorian School and Museum (very enlightening contrast for our kids), or from Llangollen Wharf, take a canal trip across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in a horse drawn boat.
Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) is a lovely Cistercian Abbey, similar to Tintern Abbey.
If you're feeling energetic, hike up to Castell Dinas Bran (Crow's Castle), so worn that it's practically melting into the mountaintop, but the view of the Dee Valley is worth the hike up.
Chwarel Wynne Slate Mine and Museum (Chirk, near Llangollen) - What's amazing about this mine is that there are vast underground caverns, miles of them, some of over 60 ft. high, and they were carved out by miners quarrying slate!
