Wine Country
Much of what's so great about Cape Town lies just outside of the city, and wine country is not just for adults. Farm stalls, restaurants and guesthouses cater to the smallest tourists. The scenery is part coastal tropics, part cultivated vineyards, all with white Cape Dutch architecture. An affordable option is to stay in a guesthouse, with day trips in every direction.
Constantia - Just south of Table Mountain, Constantia is an easy drive from the city.
Groot Constantia, South Africa's largest and oldest vineyard, is a good one-stop wine estate experience with kids. This Cape Dutch estate set in a scenic valley has an open-air, garden restaurant perfect for families. Porter Estate Produce Market - Open every Saturday mornings, this outdoor market features artisan breads, honey, free range lamb, local and mostly organic produce and hand-crafts. Plus, you can sit-down for farm-style breakfast (or “brekkie”) with plenty of kids' activities to keep the children busy. Stellenbosch - Oak-tree lined streets and South Africa's premier Afrikaans university set the tone for this town located in a fertile valley flanked by tall mountains. Like a European city centered around the town green, Stellenbosch is a great place to get out and walk around. The Fishmonger on Ryneveld Street is a small, open-air seafood restaurant ideal for families.
For a scenic dining experience just up the mountain from Stellenbosch, the Tokara wine and olive estate has a rustic climbing structure kids play area and their deli is a great breakfast destination.
