The province of KwaZulu-Natal, with high mountain peaks to the west and tropical beaches to the east, includes the homeland of the Zulu people. The name Natal was given by Vasco da Gama when he sighted the coast on Christmas Day -"natal" is the word for Christmas in Portuguese.
