Around Inverness
Cawdor Castle - Cawdor Castle conjures up Macbeth, Shakespeare's infamous feudal lord of Cawdor. This delightful castle, not at all the gloomy drippy place you'd expect, is much later than Macbeth's time (early 11th century), although there has been a castle on this site since the 12th century. As you tour the castle, kids can see the drawing and morning rooms, uncomfortable dungeon, and lovely gardens.
Don't miss a walk down by the Cawdor Burn (large stream) and through the Cawdor Big Woods, a green leafy forest with several easy trails.
Culloden Battlefield - Culloden is the momentous spot where the English soundly trounced Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Highlanders in 1746, ending that famous uprising. Kids will enjoy the Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, but you'll have to use your imagination to conjure up the battle on this flat scrubby moorland.
Close to Culloden are the Clava Cairns (Balnuaran of Clava), an intriguing mound of stones that looks like a really cool "fort." Worth a detour to see this Neolithic burial site.
Johnstons Cashmere Heritage Centre (Elgin, east of Nairn) - Producing cashmere clothing is a tradition in Scotland, and Johnstons mill has been in operation for 200 years. Take a 30 min. factory tour to see how the raw fibers are washed, carded, dyed, spun and woven into a finished sweater.
