Philadelphia
Penn's Landing
In the 18th century, Philadelphia was an important port, with ships coming and going, carrying cargoes from around the world. It was also a center of shipbuilding, and founding of the US Navy. Independence Seaport Museum is a great way for kids to experience Philadelphia's maritime history.
Independence Seaport Museum -
On the first floor, kids can climb on board and take wheel of the schooner Diligence, decorated with ships' flags. In other galleries are models of pirate ships and building the first frigate in the US navy, exhibits about slaves transported on ships, and industrial shipbuilding along the Delaware River.
In the boat workshop, watch people crafting wooden boats by hand, such as a dingy or replica sailing yacht, and ships models created in the "model ship shack."
Be sure to go upstairs to "Playland," where kids can hop into small boats, and don't miss the exhibit of miniature silver ships.
Outside the museum, walk out to explore the
Olympia, a cruiser from the 1890's used in the Spanish American War, and submarine
Becuna, a typical WWII submarine (included in museum admission). Also check out the impressive sailing ship
Moshulu, which has a restaurant.
