East - Lloyd District
Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden (Grant Park) - Join local families at Grant Park, enjoying the playground and swings, wading pool for toddlers, and adorable sculptures of Ramona, Henry and Ribsy. Little kids can tug on Ramona's hands, or climb all over Ribsy. June to September, the sculptures are also fountains, water spouts up from under Ramona's rain boots and under Ribsy's paws!
Tip: Four blocks north of Grant Park is Klickitat Street.
Lloyd Center Ice Rink - Go ice skating, year round - in summer, the rink is always crowded with kids. Rent ice skates (don't forget to bring socks) and take a turn out on the ice. Open daily, and some evening evenings.
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) - A science museum with lots of hands-on activities. Play with chemistry and make spaceships in the Discovery Lab. Learn about fossils and dinosaurs in Oregon, touch and hold live animals. Turbine Hall is for budding inventors - control your own robot, launch water rockets. For younger kids, dig in the sand, or listen to story time in the reading tent. And, there's shows in the planetarium and IMAX theater.
USS Blueback Submarine - Next to OMSI, take a 45 minute guided tour of this fast- attack submarine. Inside the submarine you'll see the torpedo, engine and control rooms, and learn how the crew lives (galley and crew's quarters) and about sonar navigation (lots of cool gauges and dials).
River Cruises -
Willamette Jet Boats - Speedy rides in jet boats, bridge tour down to Swan Island (1 hour), or cruise up the river to Willamette River Falls in Oregon City (2 hours). Okay for kids of all ages.
