Seaside
Seaside is a resort town, where the whole family can relax, rent surreys and bikes, play volleyball on the sand, go pedal boating, ride the bumper cars and tilt-a-whirl, have a round of miniature golf, eat up salt water taffy, fly kites, and kids can spend hours just playing on the beach.
Go to the beach - Seaside has a long, sandy beach that goes on for miles. There's swings and volleyball nets, a Promenade Walk with views of Tillamook Head to the south, good for biking or just take a stroll, the promenade is fine for strollers.
Seaside Aquarium - A small, homey aquarium with marine life of the Pacific Ocean - moray eels, moon jellyfish, octopus, glowing sea anemones, touch tanks with sea urchins and starfish, plus kids can feed the harbor seals. Open year round.
Go pedal boating - The calm Necanicum River is the perfect place to go pedal boating (boats hold four people). Rent pedal boats or bumper boats on River Way, next to the Seaside Convention Center.
Lewis & Clark Salt Works - In January and February 1806, members of Lewis & Clark's Corps of Discovery camped at the ocean to make salt (salt was a necessity to preserve food on their journey). They built a stone oven, made roaring fires, boiled kettles of sea water, and came away with kegs of salt. Visit a re-creation of the oven and kettles used to boil the sea water, located on Lewis & Clark Way and S. Beach Dr.
Every summer, the 3rd weekend in August is a "living history" Salt Makers event. Down on the beach (at the end of Lewis and Clark Way), and by the driftwood stump, watch people actually boiling sea water into salt - it's 1806.
Tip: In the center of town, where Broadway ends at the beach, is a bronze statue of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, looking every inch the intrepid explorers.
