Glacier National Park
Apgar Village
Visitor Center - Stop at the Visitor Center to pick up maps and the park activity schedule (junior ranger programs, campground evening programs, tipi talks, Native American dancers and singers).
Discovery Cabin - Housed in a rustic log cabin across from the visitor center, find out about all the rocks, plants and animals in Glacier National Park. There's a touch table with mountain lion pelt, big horn sheep antlers, footprints and grizzly and black bears, and a grizzly bear fur and skull. Open in the afternoon, 2 - 3:30pm daily (hours may vary, ask at the visitor center to see when it's open).
Red Bus Tours - A wonderful park tradition, take a tour on a vintage red bus (1930's style), with canvas top that rolls back for spectacular views. Your best bets are the 3+ hour tours that leave from Lake McDonald and go up and over the Going-to-the-Sun Road (parents can enjoy the scenery instead of driving). Tours departs from the Village Inn and Lake McDonald Lodge.
Rent bikes - There's a nice bike path through the woods, the McDonald Creek Bike Path. Rent bikes in the Apgar Village, bike rental shops have kids' bikes, kid size-helmets and child trailers for toddlers.
Rafting trips - The Middle Fork of the Flathead River is perfect for rafting trips. For "scenic floats," kids can be any age, babies included. For whitewater rafting, 2 ½ hour trips, for kids 6 and up.
Horseback rides - May to September, go for one hour or two hour horseback rides through the forest and along the creek. Rides are accompanied by a guide, kids must be 7 and up, children's safety helmets are provided (be sure to wear closed toed shoes and long pants).
Boating on the lake - Rent rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and go out onto Lake McDonald. A great place for the kids to get the hang of canoeing or kayaking. Minimum one hour rental. While parents are arranging for the boat, kids can go out and skip stones on the lake.
Fun food
After a day of hiking, rafting or just lazing around, stop into Eddie's Cafe for an ice cream, huckleberry-peach pie, or homemade huckleberry milk shakes and lemonade.
