This area north of Lucca, hills, rivers and valleys tucked in between the dramatic Apuan Alps and the Appennines is a gem. There are hiking trails and
Orrido di Botri (Montefegatesi) - This narrow natural gorge is a perfect place to take a picnic on a hot day, wade in the water and enjoy the outdoors.
Lago di Vagli (near Poggio) - Lago di Vagli is an artificial lake, and when the lake was made, an old section Vagli di Sotto was flooded. At low water you can see the tops of the buildings above the water. Boats are also available for hire and there are walks starting from the lake.
Grotta del Vento (Cave of Wind) (near Barga) - This is stunning cave system with glistening stalactites and stalagmites, emerald green pristine lakes and rushing underground rivers. The one hour tour goes pretty much on the level. The longer two and three hour tours go deeper in the cave and require climbing on steep ladders.
Museo della Campagna (San Pellegrino in Alpe) - San Pellegrino in Alpe has wonderful views of the Appennine mountains, and an old monastery, part of which is now the Museo della Campagna. This museum is bursting with all the homey things of rural farm life over the centuries.
