Berlin
Charlottenburg
Schloss-garten Charlottenburg - Visit this charming 17th century castle, Schloss Charlottenburg, built for Queen Sophie Charlotte, who liked parties. See how a queen lived in style.
Schloss Garten - The gardens around the Schloss are a wonderful spot to relax. First you'll encounter the formal, French style gardens (no picnicking here) and artificial lake. Behind the lake you'll find yourself in a lovely forested area. Here you can spread out your picnic or, like local Berlin families, bring along cake, juices and coffee ("kaffee and kuchen") for an afternoon snack. There are two playgrounds with climbing structures - one just west of the Schloss, the other in the forested area behind the formal gardens.
Lietzensee Park is also a great spot for families. There's a play area for kids, two lakes, ducks to feed, and a cafe where parents can sit down and have a beer or kids can have an ice cream.
Take a cruise on the river - Pick up the boat at the bridge (Schlossbruke) near the Schloss Charlottenburg for a three hour roundtrip cruise. The boat trip takes you on a circle tour on the River Spree and Landwehrkanal. This is just a wonderful way to see the center of Berlin. Boats have both English and German commentary.
