Lakeland
Florida Air Museum - This aviation museum, located on the Sun n' Fun site at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, features more than 50 aircraft on display, including one-of-a-kind designs, experimental/homebuilts, classics, ultralights, antiques and warbirds. You can step back in time with an extensive collection of Howard Hughes memorabilia including Hughes' personal flight suits, medals and trophies.
Each year is the Sun n' Fun International Fly-in air show, where kids can see flying teams in splashy aerobatic flying maneuvers. Click here for more details.
Nature Trail - A boardwalk nature trail winds through wetlands, with interpretive signs along the way.
Joker Marchant Stadium - Baseball fans come here to enjoy watching relaxed, inexpensive games featuring the major league Detroit Tigers during the team's spring training season, which runs from early March through early April. With seating for 8,500 fans, this facility is also the home stadium for the minor league Lakeland Flying Tigers, who play from April to September.
Explorations V - This children's museum features sensory, hands-on, and interactive exhibits on three floors. You'll find an emphasis on Florida's sites and businesses, such as the “explore store” supermarket modeled after the Publix chain, and the Bay News 9 studio where kids can give a news report or weather forecast. The entire “O is for Oranges" section follows the process of Florida's orange juice production from seed to store.
Kids can also produce a show in the theater, play bank teller, or visit the exhibits on space, the human body, water habitats, and more. An indoor playground space includes a dedicated area for babies and toddlers.
Polk's Nature Discovery Center - Set on the grounds of large Circle B-Bar Reserve, learn about local wilderness and wildlife in indoor and outdoor classrooms. Pick up a trail map, then head to the shores of Lake Hancock to observe alligators in their natural habitat, or walk along the marsh trails to get a glimpse of cranes, herons, and bald eagles. The Discovery Center is free.
