Klamath Area
For over a thousand years, Yurok Native Americans lived in this area. They crafted high quality canoes from redwoods and fished for salmon migrating up the Klamath River and in the ocean. Next to Lagoon Creek was the site of a Yurok village.
Lagoon Creek - Yurok Loop Trail
Lagoon Creek is a picnic area convenient to Highway 101, right next to a pond covered with yellow pond lilies. Tables, trash cans, and restrooms, this is an excellent lunch stop.
From the parking lot follow trail signs to the Yurok Loop Trail (about one mile loop). At the fork, we took the left turn, where the trail goes through lush green ferns, then a forest of Sitka spruce and Douglas-fir trees, coming around the point with dramatic coastal views.
Follow the Yurok Loop Trail back around to where you started, take the beach access trail out to False Klamath Cove. Beach has lots of driftwood forts for kids to play in, and tide pools at Wilson Creek.Klamath River Overlook -
The Klamath River travels 250 miles from Oregon through northern California, ending here at the Pacific Ocean.
From the parking lot at the end of Requa Rd., follow the half mile trail down the hillside to the overlook to see the Klamath River flowing into ocean.
Bring binoculars to look for migrating gray whales (November, December, March and April), California sea lions, harbor seals, dolphins year round.
Tip: The trail is steep, it goes down 350 ft, but is a well-designed trail, hillside is covered with coastal vegetation, not a difficult for older kids and teens, and views are stellar.
Trees of Mystery - Sky Trail - You can't miss the Trees of Mystery. As you drive by on Highway 101, there's a gigantic statue of Paul Bunyan and Babe, the blue ox.
On the Sky Trail gondola, ride high above the forest floor to the ridge summit for views of the tall trees and ocean to the west. To the east, use the binoculars to spot ospreys in their nests, perched high in the branches.
Admission to the Sky Trail also includes a walk through the trees and the "Trail of Tall Tales," redwood carvings of various figures and animals.
Klamath Jet Boats - Take a two hour ride up the Klamath River, learn about the history of the Yurok people, and see bald eagles, golden eagles, osprey, river otters, deer, elk.
