Bali - North

In North Bali, you'll find black volcanoes shrouded in the mists and a cooler climate. In the western part of the island, the landscape changes to wide and dry grasslands.

Pura Ulun Danau (Lake Bratan) - The water temple, Pura Ulun Danau, at Lake Bratan is a jewel. If you happen to be up for the sunrise, it's just magical - the meru tower, an island unto itself, surrounded by mists floating up from the lake. After you've looked at the temple, take a boat ride on the lake or pedal boats are available for rent.
Botanical Gardens (Bedugul) - The Botanical Gardens are the perfect spot for a picnic, with plenty of wide grassy areas, cool shade, and hundreds of orchids and other tropical plants.
Penelokan - Take a day trip to Penelokan for a panoramic view of Mt. Batur and the lake below. Mt. Batur originally blew its top, and a large lake, Lake Batur, formed in the caldera. The water that collects in this lake flows underground, and comes out in springs in South Bali. It's cold in the highlands, so bring a sweater or windbreaker.
Lovina Beach - Lovina has black sand beaches with great snorkeling for kids - lots of tropical fish and colorful coral. Get up early in the morning to go dolphin watching. And, take an outrigger or glass-bottomed boat for a cruise along the coastline.
