Alaska Railroad
Coastal Classic - The four hour ride on the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Seward is spectacular, and the train passes through scenery not accessible by roads. Highly recommended by several families as a highlight of their trip.
Glacier Discovery - For a great day trip from Anchorage, take the Glacier Discovery train to see Spencer Glacier. Ride the train from Anchorage to Spencer Whistle Stop. Spend a couple of hours exploring the Spencer Glacier, then hop back on the train (return is by train to Portage, then bus back to Anchorage).
At Spencer Glacier, a 1.3 mile trail goes along the Placer River to Spencer Lake, with icebergs floating in the icy water. A longer trail goes 1.8 miles further. From the end of the trail are stunning views of the dark brown moraine and glacial blue ice.
In addition to the train ride, for an easy paddle on the lake or float trip down the river, Chugach Adventure Guides will arrange the rafting stuff and train ride (for kids 5 and up).
